Elevate / Art Above Underground presents an international live performance

this Friday, Sept 16 from 5:00 to 7:00 pm

and Saturday, Sept 17th from 2:00 to 4:00 pm

MICROFICTIONS ATL

is based on a performance in Paris now redesigned for Atlanta's Underground and ELEVATE art installations.

Experience performance artists from French theatre collective Dérézo in town to collaborate with Atlanta's Théâtre du Rêve for EIGHT site-specific performances culminating in a live jazz concert with local and French musicians.

Meet at the Fountain Plaza in Underground.

Visitors will tour each performance in small groups led by a docent from Théâtre du Rêve. Tours begin and end at the Fountain Plaza where the entire crowd will be treated to a brilliant live concert by Electro Jazz Collaboration with Arnaud Hugonie of Atlanta and Yann Gueguen of Brest, France.

You'll never see your city the same way again, as hidden corners and balconies are redefined and reactivated.

The Microfiction performance project is based on a novel by French writer Régis Jauffret called Microfictions, winner of the 2007 France Culture/Telerama Literary Prize. Microfictions features 500 short stories, each just one and a half pages long celebrating the diversity, fragility, and above all the commonality of the human condition. Microfictions was performed in Paris in 2008 during a nine-hour event at the Theatre du Rond-Point on the Champs Elysées.

Now, Théâtre du Rêve brings Microfictions to The ATL as a remarkable urban experience that breathes life into unexpected places through storytelling, highlighting subtleties in the familiar that often go unnoticed. Eight site-specific performances will be performed in different styles including puppetry. The production molds itself to Atlanta’s urban landscape for the first time bringing together artists from France and Atlanta to create an interactive art experience that travels from place to place.

Chauncey Beaty

Chauncey has won numerous poetry slams, but carries the titles of the 2006 “She Slam” winner, a member of a 2006 Columbus, Ohio National Poetry Slam Team, a member of the 2007 Midwest Poetry Slam League, and the 2008 Writer’s Block Individual World Poetry Slam representative. In addition, she is the 2009 Art Amok Grand Slam winner, member of the 2009Art Amok National Poetry Slam Team and Art Amok’s Women of the World Poetry Slam representative for 2009 and 2010. She is a two time Women of the World Poetry Slam finalist, ranking 6th in 2009 and in 2010, Poetry Slam, Inc. ranked

Chauncey the 3rd female slam poet in the world.Chauncey is the founder of Hope Springs Institute’s Annual Women’s Poetry and Performance Retreat

Ayodele Heath

An Atlanta native, Ayo is author of Otherness (Brick Road Poetry Press). A graduate of the MFA program at New England College, he is recipient of fellowships to Cave Canem and the Caversham Center for Artists (South Africa). He has been a featured performer at such venues as the National Black Arts Festival, the Nuyorican Poets Cafe, and the Turner South 'My South Speaks' television campaign. His awards include a 2009 Dorothy Sargent Rosenberg Prize in Poetry and an Atlanta Bureau for Cultural Affairs Emerging Artist grant.

Theresa Davis

In 2002, Theresa joined forces with her mother and brother to form the spoken word performance group MoDaSo (Mother/ Daughter/ Son) and released two music CD's "This is for Family" and "The Uncivil War". She is a member of The Word Diversity Collective/Art Amok and represented Atlanta as a member of the 2006 - 2010 Art Amok Slam Team. In 2009 Theresa was ranked 8th female poet in the world as a finalist in the Women of the World Poetry Slam. In March of 2011, Theresa competed in the Women of the World Poetry Slam in Columbus Ohio. She won.Voted Best of Atlanta Spoken Word by Creative Loafing 2008 and 2009; SOVO "Best of Gay Atlanta Poetry/Spoken Word 2009; Women of the World Poetry Slam Champion 2011; Atlanta Art Amok Slam Team Grand Champion 2011.

Mariangela Mihai

A poet and visual artist originally from Romania, and a senior in the Anthropology department at Emory University. She is also the president of Emory’s Ethics and the Arts Society, a student arts organization whose mission is to explore the intersection between creativity and ethics, and the role art plays in inspiring positive social change. Finally, Mariangela believes that being a decent human being is not only necessary to being a good artist, but also more important.

Alice Lovelace

Alice has performed poetry and "autobiographical myths" in venues from New York City to Washington state to Chattanooga, TN and extensively around the southeast region. Writing credits include:Remembering My Birth: New and Collected Poems, Black Coffee, Forever, and This Is for Family (CD). Her work has appeared in High Performance Magazine, Drumvoices, Drumvoices Revue, Catalyst Magazine, The LOVE Anthology, Up Town/On the Town, and the anthology Black Poetry of the 80's From the Deep South.

She performs on college campuses such as Emory, The Evergreen State College, Amherst University, Spelman College, Concordia college, Columbia College, Oxford College, Berea College, Florida AMU, and Salem College.

Alice collaborated with Lisa Tuttle to create the “Harriet Rising” public art project as part of Elevate: Art above Underground.

A performance of one central performer (Allison) and 10 supporting performers. Allison combats radiation with her physical movements while the supporting performers “dust” the crowd for the affected. Stickers are distributed to those who are contagious.

OlaBad

The (S)mile is a long meditative walk, marked by the letter “S”. Bring a memento on paper that is personally important and focus on its meaning, your gratitude, and love for that memento during the walk. The memento will then be added to a collage on display in an advertising box in 5 Points MARTA station, thus creating a collectively shared memento of life. The collage will be updated weekly and curated by the artist.

A rudimentary analog of the internet using obsolete technologies. In a storefront window, multi-channel tv displays play looped images from donated VHS tapes- donated through a slot in the door. Video loops wills be updated weekly.

Memory Totem

An outdoor photography based mosaic seating area that will be a snapshot backdrop and seating for pedestrians. The photographs incorporated into the mosaic will feature historic images of ‘Old Atlanta’. The surface will take on a ‘Memory Jar’ textured surface above the seating area of various mosaic materials ranging from ceramic tiles, glass, mirrors, found objects and embellishments.

Within 10 minutes of entering the warehouses of Underground Atlanta, Zygosis begin the plans to revamp a large scale diorama of the beloved Underground and incorporate it into their video production which will be on view August 26th at Upper Alabama Street.

"Zero Mile"

Zero Mile is a site-specific window installation of colored translucent vinyl covering. Titled after the first post marking the city limits, this piece is a vision of the imagined past of the Atlanta territory built up, burned, and built again. It includes imagery inspired by the post-civil war landscape of Georgia. In the day, the image appears opaque and colorful, at night the image is illuminated with interior lights.

Carlos Eguiguren's photography is a fusion of architecture and music exposed through a lens, the result of which is an abstract image of both. His award-winning work has been shown in Santiago and Paris and published in two books. Carlos resides in Santiago, Chile but he flew all the way to Atlanta to be a part of Elevate! He arrived in Atlanta about a week ago to photograph the city and is currently in NYC putting the final touches on his images. He will be exhibiting two large prints on plexiglass. "Harriet Rising"

Harriet Rising is a visual arts project with a performance component, created in collaboration between Lisa Tuttle, visual artist, and Alice Lovelace, poet/performer. 8 columns of Upper Alabama Street are now beginning to be covered in repeated images of Harriet Tubman with aligning poetry pieces by Alice Lovelace. Harriet Rising covers the Civil War to Civil Rights, bringing renewed attention to Harriet Tubman’s historical importance while drawing parallels between Underground Atlanta and the Underground Railroad. It also lifts the visibility of courageous women and organizations working today for human rights, particularly those working on behalf of minorities and women. Using imagery, text and amplified by poetry performance, Harriet Rising is a dynamic visual, poetic, and educational experience to visitors and locals walking along Upper Alabama Street. "Celestial Flow"

This is where it's gonna be installed!

What? You think it’s too hot to go to Underground Atlanta for an outdoor art exhibit? Rests assure you won’t be feeling the heat once you see this art work. Celestial Flow is a painting of an abstracted image of water flowing over rocks, “flowing” down 5 sets of stairs near the corner of Alabama and Pryor Street like a cascading river. The colors are clear blues: cerulean, cobalt and ultramarine; making the area feel like an island of coolness in an otherwise hot urban landscape. The artist hopes that visitors will sit on the painting, eat lunch on it, read a book or otherwise enjoy the painting!

SUNDAY SOUTHERN ART REVIVAL

"Preacher"

SSAR began install this week of a large-scale layered mural on a two-story storefront on Alabama Street, right in the heart of Underground Atlanta. The image of the “Preacher” will be presented on the façade of the two-story building. The image is a figure suggesting elevation, conjuring a rising up from the ashes; an iconic image for the current transitional state of Underground Atlanta.

"Hidden Perception"

Hidden Perception is a series of pieces using messages that the viewer can only read with a mobile phone or digital camera. The messages will be produced by infrared LEDs and placed on boxes hung in store fronts throughout Underground Atlanta. The viewer will only know to use their mobile device by reading the signage indicating where a message is located. This experience encourages the participant to think about how the tactile world can have multiple layers of perspective. The use of a mobile phone or digital camera carries meaning as well; using technology to alter reality makes a statement about the future of the human experience.

"Promise"

Today's "spotlight" (haha...get it?) is on Ruth Stanford's Promise,which is a single vertical beam of light that will mark the location of Underground Atlanta. It will shine in a manner that lies midway between memorial and celebration. The light beam will be neither stationary like a memorial nor in the wide-sweeping motion of an event promotion. Instead, the beam projects upward and moves uncertainly- just enough to step away from “memorial” and hint that something just might be happening. The ambiguity of the motion when compared to two commonly recognized uses of light beams reflects the ambiguity of Underground Atlanta and suggests that although the area may be clinging to life, there remains hope for resurrection.

SIGNS FOR DIMES

Ooo, mighty fine!

"Window Shopping"

You may have seen Sign For Dimes’ old-school hand-painted advertisements appearing on the walls and windows of your favorite businesses around town. Well, add Underground Atlanta to the list because Signs For Dimes is installing a transformative display for Elevate//Art Above Underground! Window Shopping will transform vacant storefronts to display an alternate shopping experience: “Love Shop”, “Friend Emporium”, “Respect Store” and other items money cannot buy. The faux storefronts are a nostalgic reference to the way Atlanta’s shopping districts would have appeared in the early 20^th century. The project will be bright, colorful, compelling and humorous, and the viewer will be left reminded that the things we love the most can’t be bought in stores.

Doodledrag Coming to Elevate August 26th - September 2nd !!

DoodleDrag

Doodledrag is an ongoing drawing gathering and experiment; the brainchild of doodling mates Marissa Paternoster and LNY. We like to get people together, drink, talk and come up with different ideas and challenges for each other that are all about drawing.

The Doodlers will be meeting in Union Square, next to the Washington Statue, and riding the train all the way to Coney Island. Participants are asked to bring drawing utensils, paper, and tape — D. Drag encourages the riders to post their work up on the subway walls, as well as distribute their art to “jaded New Yorkers.” To that I say, we’ll show you jaded!

Elevate / Art Above Underground, presents an assortment of exhibitions showcasing

Local, National and International talent

Atlanta, Ga. -The City of Atlanta Office of Cultural Affairs Public Art Program officially launches Elevate / Art Above Underground August 26 - October 30,2011. Elevate / Art Above Underground, is a temporary art event featuring innovative projects by local, national and international artists along the Upper Alabama Street Corridor and surrounding areas in central downtown Atlanta.

Elevate / Art Above Underground as an initiative of the Office of Cultural Affairs’ Public Art Program, brings public art to downtown Atlanta that will stimulate an emerging interest in public art and downtown Atlanta. Elevate will present an assortment of exhibitions ranging from large murals to highly conceptual art with a focus on showcasing local talent.

"Underground Atlanta is looking forward to the launch of Elevate/Art Above Underground," says William P. Ciccaglione, General Manager of Underground Atlanta. "Stimulating educational, economic and cultural growth, the arts play a vital role in our community and we are thrilled to be a part of this unique public art program that will highlight Underground Atlanta and our vibrant downtown."

Nathan works to eliminate boundaries that keep us from making new connections and reaches out to the audience for participation on a personal level.

Nathan Sharratt studied Film at Pratt Institute and received a BFA in Sculpture in 2011 (expected) from the Savannah College of Art & Design.This explains the various array of media in all of his work.

Be My Blood Brother focuses on performance and relies on heavily on a contribution from the viewer - putting trust in to his audience that they will not shy away from co-facilitating the piece.

Don’t be fooled by the cover (work of the talented Chris Chambers FYI), there is mucho information to be seen with a single flip of the wrist. We haven’t released the artists who complete our immaculate exhibit, formally. We have been holding our breath and only discussing their names via smoke signal for a month now. Gotta tell ya - dyin to let it out. Pride, excitement and the inability keep our trap shut means well - we are leaking information.

A. Should I include a budget?
A detailed budget is not necessary however we do need to know what materials/technology you intend to use and the general range of your projected costs.

Elevate Talks at CAP Martkeing Roundtable this afternoon

Today at 4pm. Elevate will be giving a speech at the Downtown Marketing Roundtable in Harris Tower at Peachtree Center. This is to inform businesses, residents and sponsors of the direct and indirect effects Elevate and other Cultural Programming, such as FLUX and ACP, may have on their city centers. Elevate is not only a platform to showcase innovative artists and collectives but concurrently it strives to promote economic vigor in the downtown area.

Central Atlanta Progress is a private, not-for-profit corporation that strives to create a robust economic climate for Downtown Atlanta. With a Board of Downtown's top business leaders, CAP is funded through the investment of businesses and institutions. By combining these two initiatives and using art and culture as a vehicle for change, this event will truly be an epic movement for our city center.

The City of Atlanta Office of Cultural Affairs Public Art Program (OCA/PAP) has partnered with Underground Atlanta to launch Elevate / Art Above Underground, an event that promises to transform central downtown Atlanta. All artists and art collaborators are invited to apply for support grants to develop or present temporary art projects along the upper Alabama street corridor and throughout locations in central downtown Atlanta.
